CCS ICD S-40 cannot be used with MPLAB IDE. They can only be used with CCS Software(ICD control program and PCW/PCWH debugger) |

Try using the ICD control program(ICD.exe) and see if it connects to the unit. |

What is the PCW/PCWH version? Make sure ICD Serial is selected in the Debug Configure tab. |

Make sure all the Vdd, AVdd, Vss, AVss pins are connected properly. |

Are you using the internal oscillator and nomclr fuse. It might cause some issues with entering into programming mode. |

1.39 is the latest ICD firmware. If the software complains it might be an issue with the software which would be fixed in the next release. Ignore the warning for now. |

How does the device show up in the device manager? It should show up as CCS ICD-U40 with and ! mark(if the driver is not installed) |

Try using the latest ICD softare from the web and email tech support it is still an issue. |
