ICDS & CCS Eval. board

I just purchased the CCS ICDs and Eval board and am trying to get started in the world of PIC programming. I've tried several 16F877-20 in the eval board, however the ICDS software program says that the target was not detected. All of the parts are brand new (ICDs, board, PIC chips). I ohmed out the cables and used an O-Scope to check voltages / 20 Meg. clock signal. I see pin 1 go high when it tests for a target device, and I see some activity on ICD associated pins 39 & 40. The only computers I have access to are Win XP based. I have no difficulty detecting the ICDs and passing all ICDS / port self tests.

Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated.

Is anyone else successfully using any of these CCS components (ICDs or eval board at 20 Mhz with 16F877)???

The CCS ICD kit forthe 16F877is set up for programming and debubbing from Microchip's MPLAB software. If you are trying to use the ICDS software from CCS, you need to reprogram the 16F876 that is on the ICD itself.

I would try the MPLAB first to make sure your kit is working right. As for me, I have never used the ICDS sofware from CCS and really dont plan on using it.

Thanks for the input!! It does seem to work fine with MPLAB so I'm off and running again.

I had programmed the ICD-S with the latest image from their web page but it still doesn't work with the CCS software.

As you suggest, I guess it is a mute point if MPLAB is the preferred approach.

I've been having trouble as well with the newer versions of ccs's icd software. The problem doesn't seem to be with the firmware but with the interface program.

Here's my experience trying to program parts using the CCSs ICD program:

V0.1 works with 16F and 18F parts
V0.3 much faster for programming 16F parts, doesn't detect 18F
V0.4 doesn't detect either; also has trouble downloading firmware to ICD
V0.5 doesn't detect either

I typically use a win2k machine, but tried some of these (with the same results) on a win95 machine.

Anyway, I'm relieved to at least know someone else is having the same troubles..
