OT: cordless soldering irons
PostPosted: Thu Dec 16, 2004 6:01 pm     Reply with quote

folks,
anyone use a cordless/butane-powered soldering iron?
what's your take on their ability to replace a desktop unit?

currently i use a weller WES51 and a variety of tips for PTH and SMT work.

i've been looking at the various butane-powered units, e.g. this model from weller:

any comments on this or other models appreciated.

thanks,

Well if you are looking for portability then okay, if not, stick with the electric. It works better.

I have used the butane ones for occasional field repairs, but I prefer my electric (Metcal SP200). For one thing I can leave it on all day without it hurting itself or running out of gas. Also the butane doesn't have ESD protection built in. The electrics have true temperature control, not just power control.
