OT: DTR Monitor not through a dedicated RS232 Shifter
PostPosted: Fri Jul 21, 2006 10:29 am     Reply with quote

Is this an OK way to monitor the DTR at a 3.3V PIC?

Code:

      Schottky    10K Cur. Limiter

DTR------>|-------/\/\/\-----------------PIC
                            |       |
                            |       |
                            |       |
                            -       \
                3V Zener    A       /   10M pull down
                            |       \
                            |       |
                            |       |
                           GND     GND

Thanks.

This will work however - I would increase the 10K to 47K and I would decrease the 10M to 1M. You do not actually need the zener because the input protection diode of the PIC and the 47K resistor limit the current into the PIC.

An simpler alternative is to remove the input diode and replace the zener with a normal diode.
