SIOW: how to send an ASCII string terminated with a CR ?
PostPosted: Sun Nov 08, 2015 11:45 pm     Reply with quote

I'm a big fan of our terminal program SIOW. But I can't seem to figure out how to send an ASCII string terminated with carriage return (CR). When I type 24 24 24 into Hex send and press enter, the CR is sent at the end. When I type $$$ into ASCII send and press enter, the CR is not sent at the end. The protocol** which I'm talking to is in ASCII.

Is the a way to send the CR after ASCII? I have tried \r, but no effect.

** for RN4020, if anyone is curious

ASCII is not really a protocol....
It is just a description of what bytes represent what characters.

However what makes you think that CR is not being sent?.

Try the experiment, if you have two serial ports or port adapters, of wiring them together (null modem wiring), so you can see what is being sent. Run two copies of SIOW talking to both ports. Then you can see on the second, exactly what has been sent on the first.

Hit enter on your keyboard, and '0D' hex will be sent (carriage return).

I suspect you have the 'seeing' of this turned off, so your system is not displaying it:
View, ASCII options, pull down arrow to the right, 'Display CR/LF/BS'.
If this is not selected, SIOW (in ASCII display mode), will not display the CR character, just silently going back to the start of the line....
