I wanted to give another update. Defining the fuses helped (especially #fuses SOSC_DIGITAL, which seemed to be essential for this project), but I kept blowing PICs. Last week I noticed that I did not have a pull up resistor on the MCLR pin (I am using ICSP). After putting the pull up resistor in place I have not blown another PIC since. So, I think that was my problem in addition to not having the right fuses defined in the code.
