We used RS485 to connect 32 PIC18F1320, with each PIC being about one meter apart from the next one. It worked very well.
The master is a PIC18F452 which is also connected on the RS485 network.

see the following thread for some good ideas. the PDF protocol document i posted on Feb 13, 2006 will work perfectly with the setup you describe above.
