Another plug for a demo board - I recently went through this myself, using the demo from Microchip (all of $60, I think). It has an rs232 port on it, which you can connect to a pc (e.g. hyperterm) and be assured that the pic is running. It outputs a message when it starts up, when the usb cable is connected (looks at the power supply pins) - very helpful.

Note: in the usb example code, you'll need to "un-comment" a line, I think line 76, #define USB_CON_SENSE_PIN PIN_B2, but don't remember for sure.
