Manufacturer: http://www.hoperf.com/rf_fsk/rfm12b.htm

I am struggling with this modules. Sadly I lost the good code due to HD crash. According to PDF from the manufacturer this should be good setup for SPI
Code:
setup_spi(SPI_MASTER|SPI_L_TO_H|SPI_XMIT_L_TO_H|SPI_CLK_DIV_4);

I'm using 8MHz internal oscillator in that particular case.

Also I found a German forum with CCS code, but it didn't work for me.

I'm not using the HopeRF modules, but I can confirm, that SPI Mode 0, as sel in your use_spi() statement is correct according to the manufacturer datasheet. Also SPI speed should no problem, because the chip works up to 20 MHz. So either a hardware problem or incorrect SPI command format should be expected.
